Etsy fees in Ireland
On a $36 order an Irish seller pays $5.32 — 14.8% — against 10.8% for a seller in the United States. That is fourteenth of the 32 seller countries and ninth in the EU, which sounds unremarkable until you read the fourth column of the table below. Every other EU country can end its tax line by filing a VAT number. Etsy names Ireland — alone in the EU — as charged regardless. Once every seller does the one thing Etsy allows, Ireland is fifth of the 32, and the most expensive country in the EU to sell from.

Where the gap actually is
Etsy’s percentage fees are added together and then multiplied by the tax on them. Ireland’s percentages are mid-table for Europe. The multiplier is the highest on the platform that no filing can remove.
| Percentage fees | Ireland | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction fee | 6.50% | 6.50% |
| Payment processing | 4.00% | 3.00% |
| Regulatory operating fee | — | — |
| Subtotal | 10.50% | 9.50% |
| VAT charged on those fees | × 1.23 | — |
| What Etsy actually charges | 12.92% | 9.50% |
On top of the percentage, both countries pay the $0.20 listing fee and a fixed amount per order — €0.30 in Ireland, $0.25 in the US. The 23% VAT applies to those flat fees too. The United States is the only one of the 32 seller countries where Etsy charges no tax on its own fees at all — 30 of the other 31 are taxed, and Brazil is the one Etsy’s article never names.

The one EU country a VAT number does not help
$1.00 of that $5.32 is 23% Irish VAT on Etsy’s fees. Everywhere else in the EU a VAT number stops that charge at source. Etsy’s own page carves Ireland out by name.
What is specific to Ireland
The headline 6.5% transaction fee is the same in all 32 countries. These are the lines that actually differ.
The same order, sold from every country Etsy supports
Same $30 item, same $6 shipping, same $8 cost. Sorted from cheapest to most expensive. The fourth column is what Etsy takes once a VAT ID is on file, where Etsy allows that — and Ireland’s is a dash.

| Hungary | $6.40 | 17.8% | $5.04 | $21.60 |
| Turkey | $6.92 | 19.2% | $5.77 | $21.08 |
A dash in the fourth column means the charge cannot be removed by adding a tax ID: Etsy charges it regardless in Ireland, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Switzerland; there is no tax on fees to remove in the United States; Etsy names Canada in a section of its own but publishes no rate there, and never names Brazil at all. “You keep” is the default case, before any tax ID. Local-currency fixed fees are converted to USD at a stored reference rate, so treat the last decimal as indicative. Excludes Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads — those are a chosen budget and an order-specific fee, not a cost on every sale.
The same table, after every seller does the one thing Etsy allows
The table above is what Etsy bills by default. But 24 of the 32 countries can end their tax line by putting a registration number on file. Assume every one of them does. The order changes, and Ireland climbs nine places.
| Most expensive, after filing | Etsy takes | % of gross | The tax line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Turkey | $5.77 | 16.0% | Tax ID removes it |
| 2. Japan | $5.50 | 15.3% | Cannot be removed |
| 3. Mexico | $5.37 | 14.9% | Cannot be removed |
| 4. South Africa | $5.36 | 14.9% | Cannot be removed |

| 7. Hungary | $5.04 | 14.0% | VAT ID removes it |
| 8. Switzerland | $4.97 | 13.8% | Cannot be removed |
| 9. France | $4.74 | 13.2% | VAT ID removes it |
| 10. Spain | $4.65 | 12.9% | VAT ID removes it |
| 11. India | $4.62 | 12.8% | GSTIN removes it |
| 12. Italy | $4.62 | 12.8% | VAT ID removes it |
Top twelve of 32 shown. Countries in Etsy’s removable group are shown with the tax removed; Ireland, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Switzerland keep theirs because Etsy charges regardless; Canada and Brazil are shown as billed today: Etsy names Canada in a section of its own without publishing a rate, and never names Brazil at all. This is a modelled comparison, not a claim about what any particular shop has filed.
Ireland is fourteenth in the first table and fifth in this one. Every country that overtakes it going down this list is outside the EU. Inside the EU, nothing is above Ireland at all — and the three countries with an identical rate card, Poland and Portugal, are eleven places below.
What the gap actually costs an Irish shop
The comparison that matters is not Ireland against the United States — you cannot move — but Ireland against the countries that sell the same things at the same rates.
- $1.00 per order that Poland and Portugal do not pay. Identical rate card, identical 23%, identical euro. Theirs comes off with a VAT number; yours does not. At $2,000 a month in sales that is $664 a year.
- $1.45 per order against a US seller. A hundred orders at $36 costs $532 in fees from Ireland and $387 from the US — about $970 a year at $2,000 a month.
- You have to price about 4.6% higher to take home the same money. To net what a US seller nets on a $36 order, an Irish seller has to list at $31.67 instead of $30.00. That is a pricing input, not a paperwork problem.
None of this is an argument against selling from Ireland. It is an argument for knowing which line is fixed before you set a price — because on this one, unusually, there is no form to fill in that makes it go away.
Three things that surprise almost everyone
- Etsy charges its 6.5% on the shipping you collect. Charge €6 postage and Etsy bills 6.5% of it, plus payment processing, plus 23% VAT on both. Folding postage into the item price and offering free shipping changes nothing — the fee lands on the total either way.
- The $0.20 listing fee is charged again every four months. It is not once per product. Every renewal is another $0.20 plus VAT, whether or not the listing has sold, so a shop with 200 listings pays about $123 a year in listing fees alone before a single sale.
- The 23% is on Etsy’s fees, not on your sale. It is $1.00 on a $36 order because it applies to the $4.33 Etsy charges, not to the $36 the buyer paid. The VAT your buyer pays on the product is a separate matter entirely and does not appear anywhere on this page.

Common questions
What are Etsy fees in Ireland in 2026?
An Irish seller pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping, payment processing of 4.0% + €0.30, no regulatory operating fee, and 23% Irish VAT on all of those fees. A $30 item with $6 shipping costs $5.32 in total fees, or 14.8% of the gross order.
Can Irish sellers remove the 23% VAT on Etsy fees with a VAT number?
No. Etsy’s help page on VAT collection on seller fees lists two groups. The first — where adding a VAT ID stops the charge — is written as “the EU (excluding Ireland)”. The second, where Etsy charges “regardless of whether you’ve submitted a VAT ID to us”, names Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, Japan, Serbia, South Africa, Switzerland and Vietnam. Ireland is the only EU country in that second group. A VAT number does not stop the charge; what it changes is whether the VAT is recoverable in your own VAT return, which is a question for your accountant.
Why is Ireland the only EU country where a VAT ID does not work?
Because Etsy’s European company is Irish. Etsy’s Terms of Use say that for users outside the United States and Canada “the contract is between you and Etsy Ireland UC”, and Etsy’s legal imprint gives that company an Irish VAT number, IE9777587C, at One Le Pole Square, Ship Street Great, Dublin 8. For a business customer in another EU country the place of supply rules make it a cross-border B2B supply, so the recipient self-accounts under the reverse charge and Etsy charges nothing. For a business customer in Ireland the supplier and the customer are in the same member state, so it is a domestic supply and Revenue’s own guidance puts the supplier — Etsy — on the hook to charge Irish VAT. The carve-out is not a policy choice about Ireland; it is where Etsy’s European company is registered.
Are Etsy fees higher in Ireland than in the rest of the EU?
By default, no — Ireland is ninth of the eighteen EU countries Etsy supports, and pays exactly the same $5.32 as Poland and Portugal on a $36 order. After every seller files a VAT number, yes: Poland and Portugal drop to $4.33 and Ireland does not move, which makes Ireland the most expensive EU country to sell from on Etsy. Hungary starts $1.07 above Ireland and ends $0.28 below it.
Does Etsy charge a regulatory operating fee in Ireland?
No. Etsy’s regulatory operating fee applies in Canada, France, Hungary, India, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Ireland is not on that list, so this line is zero.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping in Ireland?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge the buyer as well as to the item price, and the 23% VAT rides on the same base. Building postage into the item price and offering free shipping does not avoid it — the fee applies to the total either way.
Fees are the easy part. Choosing what to make is the hard part.
