Etsy fee and policy changes, with dates and sources

Most “Etsy just changed the rules” posts do not tell you when the change took effect, and a surprising number of them are describing a rule that has been in force for over a year. Every entry below states the date Etsy published it and links to the Etsy page it came from, so you can check it in one click rather than trust us.

Read this first if you sell print-on-demand, digital or laser-cut items

There is a claim going round that on 11 August 2026 Etsy introduced a rule requiring items made with computerized tools — laser cutters, sublimation printers, cutting machines — to be based on the seller’s own original design, making purchased templates and licensed clipart no longer acceptable.

What Etsy actually changed on 11 August 2026The Prohibited Items policy. Its own header reads: “This policy was updated on August 11, 2026 with changes to Section 2.” Section 2 is Animal Products. The change bans items made from or containing natural animal fur — mink, fox, rabbit, badger, coyote, raccoon dog — “regardless of age or origin”, which removes the vintage exemption. Leather, sheepskin, shearling, cowhide, wool and mohair are explicitly excluded from the ban, as is taxidermy. That policy contains no mention of computerized tools, templates, AI or print-on-demand.
The original-design rule is real — it is just not newIt lives in the Creativity Standards, which say of items made with computerized tools: “These items must be produced based on a seller’s original design and are often personalized or customized to a buyer’s specification.” That page carries the stamp “Last updated on Jun 10, 2025”. It has not been revised in 2026 at all.
Why the difference matters to youIf the rule were seven days old you would have a grace period and time to react. It is fourteen months old. So the honest read is the less comfortable one: if your listings are compliant today, they were compliant in June 2025 and nothing has changed for you. If they are not, you have been exposed for over a year and the risk is not new — it is overdue. Either way, the deadline you were told about does not exist.

We are not claiming Etsy is lenient here. Listings do get removed under the Creativity Standards, and Etsy states plainly that “sellers remain obligated to pay any fees incurred in listing such items.” The point is narrower: check the date stamp on the policy page before you rebuild your catalogue in a panic.

The Regulatory Operating Fee change, in full

This is the change most fee calculators and fee articles have not caught up with, so it is worth the detail. Etsy announced it on 22 April 2026 and it took effect on 22 June 2026. Etsy’s stated reason: “These fees are set by country and reviewed each year to reflect the cost of doing business in each region, including local laws, taxes, and compliance requirements.”

MarketBefore 22 Jun 2026NowDirection

Italy0.32%0.80%↑ up
Spain0.72%0.88%↑ up
Türkiye2.27%1.67%↓ down
United Kingdom0.32%0.48%↑ up

The fee is charged on the same base as the transaction fee — item price plus shipping. Two markets got cheaper: India and Türkiye. France more than doubled. Hungary did not have this fee at all before. Our fee calculator and every country page were rebuilt from these figures on 18 August 2026.

Common questions

Did Etsy change its rules for print-on-demand sellers on 11 August 2026?

No. The policy Etsy updated on 11 August 2026 was the Prohibited Items policy, and the change was to Section 2, Animal Products — a ban on items made from or containing natural animal fur regardless of age or origin. That policy contains no mention of computerized tools, templates, AI or print-on-demand. The rule requiring items made with computerized tools to be based on a seller’s own original design is real, but it lives in the Creativity Standards, which carry the stamp "Last updated on Jun 10, 2025".

Has Etsy banned AI-generated products?

No. Etsy allows AI-generated items and requires disclosure instead: "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI." Headlines announcing an Etsy AI ban are describing a rule that does not exist. What Etsy does require is that items made with computerized tools are produced from the seller’s own original design, and that production partners are disclosed.

What is the Etsy Regulatory Operating Fee in 2026?

It is a percentage Etsy charges sellers in certain countries on the same base as the transaction fee — item price plus shipping. Etsy changed it in seven markets on 22 June 2026: France went from 0.47% to 1.14%, Italy 0.32% to 0.80%, Spain 0.72% to 0.88%, the UK 0.32% to 0.48%, and Hungary gained a 1.97% fee it did not have before. Two markets went down: India from 0.29% to 0.05% and Türkiye from 2.27% to 1.67%. Canada (0.50%) and Vietnam (1.24%) also carry the fee.

Did Etsy raise its fees in 2026?

The headline fees did not change. The listing fee is still $0.20 for a four-month listing and the transaction fee is still 6.5% of item price plus shipping and gift wrapping; Etsy’s fees policy carries "Last updated: Feb 13, 2026". What did change is the country-specific Regulatory Operating Fee on 22 June 2026, and that is the line most fee breakdowns have not updated.

Do I have to ship DDP to the United States now?

If you sell from outside the US to US buyers, yes. From 9 July 2026 Etsy requires sellers to account for duties and import fees upfront in their pricing and ship Delivered Duty Paid. Etsy’s stated reason is that buyers abandon orders when charged at delivery. Practically, this means the duty is a cost you price in, not a surprise the buyer absorbs.

How do I check an Etsy policy claim myself?

Open the policy page on etsy.com and read the date stamp at the top. Etsy prints a "last updated" date on its legal pages — the Creativity Standards say 10 June 2025, the fees policy says 13 February 2026, and the Prohibited Items policy states which section changed and when. If a blog post says Etsy "just" changed something and the policy page does not carry a matching date, the blog is wrong.
