Etsy fees in Canada

Canada is the country where a single national answer is wrong, because the tax charged on Etsy’s fees depends on your province. Below is every line on a real order, in the order Etsy charges them, with nothing folded together to make the total look smaller.

Fee mechanics only. Nothing here is tax advice — registration and liability questions belong with an accountant. Not affiliated with Etsy, Inc.

Costing you $8 in materials, labour and packaging. Every figure is generated from the same dataset as our calculator, so this page and the tool can never disagree.

Etsy takes 11.1% of the gross order. A US seller pays 10.8% on the identical order — the difference is explained below.

What is specific to Canada

The headline 6.5% is the same everywhere. These are the lines that actually differ.

GST 5% is the floor, not the answerEtsy applies Canadian sales tax to its own fees. The calculator on this page uses 5%, which is the federal GST — the baseline that applies everywhere. If you are in a province that only charges GST (Alberta, and the territories), that is the whole story and your fee burden is about 11.1% of a $36 order.
In HST provinces the number is materially higherOntario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI use a Harmonised Sales Tax of 13–15% instead of 5% GST. If you are in Ontario, the tax on your Etsy fees is 13%, not 5% — so the fee-on-fee line is roughly two and a half times what this page’s default shows. In PEI and the Atlantic provinces it is 15%.
In PST provinces it depends on how the service is treatedBritish Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge GST plus a separate provincial tax (PST or QST). Whether provincial tax applies to a marketplace service fee is not uniform, and it has changed. This is exactly the kind of question to put to an accountant rather than to a calculator — including ours.
Registered for GST/HST? It changes everything on this pageIf you are GST/HST registered, tax charged on Etsy’s fees is generally an input tax credit and may be recoverable. Below the CA$30,000 small-supplier threshold you are not required to register and you absorb the tax. That threshold decision is a bigger lever on your margin than anything else on this page.

Common questions

What are Etsy fees in Canada in 2026?

A Canadian seller pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping, payment processing of 3% + CA$0.25, and sales tax on those fees. Using the 5% federal GST baseline, a $30 item with $6 shipping costs about $3.99 in total fees, or roughly 11.1% of the gross order.

Does my province change what I pay in Etsy fees?

It changes the tax charged on those fees, which is a real part of the total. Etsy's own fees are the same nationwide, but the sales tax applied to them follows your province: 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 15% in the Atlantic provinces, and GST plus a separate provincial tax in BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec.

Can I claim back the tax Etsy charges on its fees?

If you are registered for GST/HST, tax paid on Etsy's fees is generally an input tax credit and may be recoverable on your return. If you are under the CA$30,000 small-supplier threshold and not registered, you absorb it. Which side of that line you want to be on is a real business decision — talk to an accountant, not a calculator.

Are Etsy fees higher in Canada than in the US?

Slightly, and the difference is almost entirely the sales tax applied to Etsy's fees. Etsy's underlying rates are the same — 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 payment processing. On a $36 gross order a US seller pays about 10.8% and an Alberta seller about 11.1%; an Ontario seller pays more because HST is 13%.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping in Canada?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping charged to the buyer as well as to the item price. Offering "free shipping" by building the cost into the item price does not avoid this — the fee applies to the total either way.

Fees are the easy part. Pricing is the hard part.
