A $30 item with $6 shipping, sold from the United States

The buyer pays $36.00. Etsy charges the transaction fee on the whole $36 — item plus shipping — which is the single most common thing US sellers get wrong.

What is specific to the United States

The headline $0.20 and 6.5% are the same in all 32 countries. These are the lines that actually differ — and in the US, two of them are simply absent.

No VAT or GST is charged on Etsy’s fees — the only country where Etsy says soIn 30 of the 32 Etsy seller countries, the fees themselves are taxed: a German seller pays 19% on top of every fee line, a Hungarian seller 27%, a Turkish seller 20%. Brazil is the only other country without a rate, and only because Etsy’s VAT article never names it. In the United States that line does not exist. It is the single biggest reason a US shop keeps more of the same order.

No Regulatory Operating FeeEtsy charges a Regulatory Operating Fee in eight countries — the UK 0.48%, Canada 0.50%, Italy 0.80%, Spain 0.88%, France 1.14%, Turkey 1.67%, Hungary 1.97%, India 0.05%. The United States is not one of them, so there is nothing extra riding on the same base as your transaction fee.

Payment processing is tied for the lowest rate Etsy charges3% + $0.25 per order. Only Australia and New Zealand (domestic orders) and Canada (domestic and US orders) match the 3%; most of Europe pays 4%, Japan 6%, Brazil and Turkey 6.5%. The flat part is charged once per order, not per item — so bundles and multi-item orders dilute it.

Sales tax on the order raises one fee, slightlyEtsy’s payment processing page says: “The fees are taken from the item’s total sale price, including its shipping fees, and any applicable sales tax.” So on a taxed order you also pay 3% of the sales tax — 30 cents for every $10 of tax the buyer is charged. The $3.87 above is an order with no sales tax. Whether sales tax applies is its own question for an accountant; this page is about fee mechanics only. A US seller and a Turkish seller doing identical work on an identical order are 8.1 percentage points apart before either of them has paid for materials. That gap is not a discount Etsy gives Americans — it is tax law and regulatory cost in the other 31 countries, passed through.

Three fee mechanics US sellers should know

Shipping is part of the 6.5%Charge $6 for postage and Etsy takes 6.5% of that too — 39 cents on this order. “Free shipping” does not avoid it either; it just moves the postage into the item price, where the same 6.5% applies. What free shipping actually buys you is search placement, not a smaller fee.

The $0.20 is per renewal, not per saleAn Etsy listing lasts four months, so a listing that sits unsold for a year auto-renews three times and has cost you $0.60 before anyone bought anything. With 100 unsold listings on auto-renew that is $60 a year in pure carrying cost — which is why how long a listing lasts is a money question, not an admin one.

The flat $0.25 hits small orders hardestOn a $36 order the flat fee is 0.7% of the total. On a $6 order it is 4.2%. If your shop is built on low-priced items, the flat fee — not the 6.5% — is the line that decides whether the maths works. Bundling two items into one order pays it once instead of twice.

Common questions

What percentage does Etsy take in the US?

On a $36 order (a $30 item with $6 shipping) Etsy takes $3.87, which is 10.75% of the order. Of that, 9.5% is percentage-based — 6.5% transaction plus 3% payment processing — and the rest is the $0.20 listing fee and the flat $0.25 per order. There is no VAT on fees and no regulatory operating fee in the United States.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment processing both apply to the order total, which includes what the buyer paid for shipping. On this order that is 39 cents of transaction fee on the $6 of postage alone.

Why do US sellers pay less than sellers in other countries?

Two lines that exist elsewhere are absent in the US: VAT or GST on Etsy’s own fees, and the Regulatory Operating Fee. Thirty of the 32 seller countries pay tax on the fees — 19% in Germany, 20% in the UK and Turkey, 27% in Hungary. Eight also pay a regulatory operating fee. The United States pays neither, which is why it sits first in the table above at 9.5%.

Is the $0.20 listing fee charged again when a listing renews?

Are Etsy Ads included in these numbers?

No, deliberately. Etsy Ads is a daily budget you set yourself, and Offsite Ads only applies to orders that came through Etsy’s own advertising. Folding either into a flat percentage would misrepresent a typical order. Set them aside and judge them on their own return.
