What size should Etsy listing photos be?
At least 2000 pixels on both sides, kept under 1 MB, with the first photo square or landscape and at least 635 pixels. Those four numbers are Etsy’s, quoted below — and they conflict less than sellers think.

The short answer

2000 pixels and under 1 MB are not in conflict
The most common mistake is shrinking a photo below 2000 pixels to get under the 1 MB warning. That trades away resolution you did not need to trade. At 2000 pixels the file is small already — the size problem lives in the camera’s original dimensions, not in quality.
We measured it rather than assuming. Five ordinary camera photos, centre-cropped to a square, resized to 2000 × 2000 and saved as JPEG at quality 90:
| Photo | Straight from the camera | At 2000 × 2000, quality 90 |
|---|---|---|
| Photo A | 5184 × 3456 · 3.6 MB | 253 KB |
| Photo B | 5184 × 3456 · 4.7 MB | 468 KB |
| Photo C | 5184 × 3456 · 5.2 MB | 612 KB |
| Photo D | 3173 × 2380 · 1.1 MB | 683 KB |
| Photo E | 4144 × 3108 · 1.3 MB | 456 KB |
Five photos, JPEG, centre-cropped square, Lanczos resampling, optimised. Median result 469 KB; every one under Etsy’s 1 MB threshold. Measured 26 August 2026 — reproduce it with any image library.
Originals ran 1.1 to 5.2 MB. After resizing to Etsy’s recommended 2000 pixels, the same photos came out between 253 KB and 683 KB — roughly a fifth of the limit, at full recommended resolution. Even at quality 95 none of the five reached 1 MB. So the sequence is: resize to 2000, save as JPEG at quality 85–90, stop worrying.

How to check a photo in one minute
- Check the pixel dimensions. Under 2000 on either side and you are below Etsy’s recommendation; under 635 on the first photo and Etsy says it can cost you search position.
- Check the file size. Over 1 MB, resize rather than re-compress — the dimensions are almost always the cause.
- Check the shape of the first photo. Portrait first photos get cropped in the grid.
- Or drop it into the free Etsy photo checker, which reads all three without uploading the image anywhere.
Common questions
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on both width and height: “We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more.”
What is the maximum file size for an Etsy photo?
Etsy warns above 1MB: “Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection.” It is a warning threshold rather than a hard block.
Do I have to shrink my photos below 2000 pixels to get under 1MB?
No. In a measurement of five camera photos resized to 2000 × 2000 and saved as JPEG at quality 90, file sizes came out between 253 KB and 683 KB — a fraction of the 1 MB threshold at full recommended resolution. Resize the dimensions rather than lowering quality.
How many photos can you add to an Etsy listing?
Up to 20, alongside 2 videos of 5 to 15 seconds each, according to Etsy’s How to Create a Listing help page.
Should the first Etsy photo be square or portrait?
Etsy states: “The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square.” Portrait first photos get cropped in search results.
Which image file types does Etsy accept?
Etsy states: “All images in your shop should be one of these file types: .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, or .heic.”
2000 pixels of a badly lit product is still a badly lit product. Growtsy’s Photo Studio turns one product shot into listing-safe scene variants, and separates what belongs in the Etsy gallery from what belongs in an ad.
