The 20-character limit is the one that actually bites
Nobody runs out of tags. People run out of characters. The phrases buyers actually type are usually longer than what Etsy will let you save, so the limit quietly rewrites your keyword list for you.

Counted exactly, spaces included. Nine of these fifteen fit; six do not.
The pattern is consistent: two-word phrases nearly always fit, three-word phrases sit right on the edge, and any phrase built on personalized (12 characters before you have described anything) is almost certainly over. That is why so much Etsy tag advice quietly assumes short, generic tags — not because short tags are better, but because long ones will not save.
How much listings share tags: across 5,600 live listings in 56 products, 79.4% of the different tags in use appeared on one listing only, and a product’s most used tag was on a median 36.5% of its listings. Counted from Etsy’s API on 21 October 2026 to 22 October 2026: Etsy listing data.

How to check your own tags in one minute
No tool required — but a tool is faster than counting by hand.
- Open the listing in your Etsy shop manager and copy the tag row.
- Count characters on the longest one. If it is over 20, Etsy has already truncated or refused it.
- Count how many tags you actually filled. Unused slots are the cheapest thing to fix on a listing.

Does Growtsy’s own output respect these limits?

In the listings Growtsy has generated, no listing carries more than 13 tags and no tag exceeds 20 characters — zero violations when we checked the database on 23 October 2026. Titles are held to Etsy’s 140-character limit as well; every title generated since 21 April 2026 is inside it.
That sample includes the founder’s own testing, which is the majority of it. Growtsy is a new product and does not pretend otherwise.

How many tags can you use on an Etsy listing?
Up to 13. Etsy’s help page states: “You can use up to 13 tags per listing.” It is a maximum, not a requirement — using nine is allowed, it just leaves search surface unused.
What is the character limit for an Etsy tag?
20 characters, spaces included. Etsy’s help page states: “Each tag can contain up to 20 characters.” For example, custom name necklace is exactly 20 characters and fits; personalized birthday gift is 26 and does not.
Can an Etsy tag be more than one word?
Yes, and Etsy recommends it: “A single tag can be a short descriptive phrase (for example, ‘silver earrings’ or ‘minimalist jewelry’).”
Do spaces count toward the 20-character tag limit?
Yes. The limit applies to the tag exactly as written, so every space consumes one of the 20 characters.
