01 · Getting started

The questions everyone asks before opening a shop.

Is selling on Etsy still worth it in 2026?

Yes — with a condition. Etsy still sends you buyers who are actively searching for handmade, vintage and craft products, which is traffic you'd otherwise pay for. But the marketplace is crowded, so the sellers who win are the ones who validate demand before making a product, not after. If you pick niches where demand exists and competition has gaps, Etsy remains one of the cheapest ways to start selling globally.

How do I open an Etsy shop, step by step?

Go to etsy.com/sell, create an account, choose your shop language, country and currency, then pick a shop name (you can change it once instantly, later by request). Add at least one listing, set up how you'll get paid (Etsy Payments where available), and add a billing method. Etsy also charges a one-time shop setup fee (roughly $15–29 depending on region). Total time: under an hour. The hard part isn't opening the shop — it's deciding what to list first.

What sells best on Etsy?

Consistently strong categories: personalized gifts, jewelry, home decor, wall art and digital downloads (planners, templates, printables), craft supplies, wedding items, and niche apparel. But "best category" is the wrong frame — inside every big category there are saturated corners and open corners. A specific product with a differentiated angle in a mid-size niche usually beats a generic product in a huge one.

How many listings should I start with?

Aim for 10–20 well-made listings rather than 1–2. More listings mean more chances to appear in search, more data about what buyers respond to, and a shop that looks alive. Quality still beats quantity: 10 listings with strong photos and complete tags outperform 40 rushed ones.

02 · Fees & pricing

What Etsy actually takes, and how to price so you keep a margin.

How much does Etsy take from a sale? (2026 fees)

Fee
Listing feeper listing, renews every 4 months or on sale$0.20
Transaction feeon item + shipping + gift wrap6.5%
Payment processingUS rate; varies by country3% + $0.25
Offsite Adsonly when that ad brings the sale12–15%
Currency conversionif listing ≠ payout currency2.5%

On a typical $50 US sale without Offsite Ads, total fees land around ~10%. If the sale came through an Offsite Ad, it can reach ~25%. Optional extras: Etsy Plus at $10/month, and a one-time shop setup fee for new shops.

Fees change over time and vary by country — always confirm against Etsy's official fee policy before building your pricing.

How should I price my products?

Work backwards from profit, not forwards from "what feels cheap enough":

  • Price = (materials + labor + packaging + shipping cost share) + Etsy fees + profit.
  • Reserve roughly 10–13% of the sale price for Etsy fees (more if Offsite Ads apply to you).
  • Check the real price range buyers pay in your niche — being the cheapest signals low quality on Etsy more often than it wins sales.

If the numbers only work at a price far above what the niche pays, that's not a pricing problem — it's a product-selection problem. Better to learn that before producing inventory.

03 · Etsy SEO — search, titles & tags

How the algorithm decides who gets seen.

How does Etsy search actually work?

Two phases. First query matching: Etsy finds listings whose titles, tags, categories and attributes match what the buyer typed. Then ranking: matched listings are ordered by listing quality score (click and purchase history), recency, customer experience score (reviews, about section, policies), shipping price, and personalization. Practical takeaway: matching gets you considered, but photos and price get you clicked — both halves matter.

What makes a good Etsy title?

Put the most important buyer phrase first — the exact words someone would type, like "personalized dog collar" — then extend with 2–3 supporting phrases separated naturally. Keep it readable: keyword-stuffed, comma-spammed titles hurt clicks even when they match. Around 60–80 characters of meaningful phrases beats using all 140 with noise.

How should I use the 13 tags?

Use all 13, every time — empty tags are free visibility thrown away. Best practice: multi-word phrases ("boho wall decor", not "boho" + "wall" + "decor"), no repeats of the exact same phrase in different orders, a mix of broad and specific, and a few occasion or recipient tags ("gift for mom", "birthday gift"). Don't waste tags on words already covered by your category or attributes.

Why is my listing getting no views?

Almost always a matching problem: your title and tags don't contain the phrases buyers actually type, or you're targeting phrases so competitive that page 14 is invisible. Fix order: rewrite the title around one realistic primary phrase, fill all 13 tags with buyer language, check your category is the most specific one available, then give it 2–3 weeks — new listings get a temporary recency boost worth using well.

Why am I getting views but no sales?

Then search is finding you and buyers aren't convinced. The usual suspects, in order: first photo doesn't sell the product, price feels wrong for the perceived quality, shipping cost surprises at checkout, thin description that leaves size/material questions open, or few reviews with no trust signals. Views-without-sales is a conversion problem — fix the listing page, not the tags.

04 · Product photos

The #1 conversion lever on Etsy.

What are the photo requirements and how many should I upload?

Etsy allows 10 photos + 1 video per listing; use every slot. Recommended size is 2000px+ on the shortest side (3000px is comfortable for zoom). A strong gallery covers: hero shot on clean background, lifestyle scene in real context, scale reference (in hand / in room), detail close-up, variations or color options, packaging, and a text-overlay card for sizing or care only if needed.

What makes a first photo people actually click?

In search results your first photo is a thumbnail competing against 47 others on the same screen. Winners share three traits: the product fills most of the frame, the background doesn't fight the product, and lighting is bright and natural. Lifestyle context helps for decor and wearables; clean studio look helps for supplies and small items. Test two different first photos a few weeks apart and keep the one with better click-through.

05 · Ads, growth & product types

Where to spend, and which formats are worth it.

Are Etsy Ads worth it?

Etsy Ads (onsite) work best for listings that already convert — ads multiply traffic, they don't fix a weak listing. Sensible approach: start at $1–3/day on your 3–5 best listings, run for two weeks, then cut every listing whose ad spend exceeds its margin. If a listing can't convert organic visits, promoting it just burns budget faster.

What is Offsite Ads and can I turn it off?

Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Instagram and other platforms. You pay only when such an ad leads to a sale: 15% of that order if your shop made under $10,000 in the trailing 365 days (you can opt out), 12% if over $10,000 (mandatory). Price so that an occasional 12–15% fee doesn't put the order underwater.

Are digital products a good idea on Etsy?

Digital downloads (planners, wall-art printables, templates, SVGs) are the highest-margin format on Etsy: no materials, no shipping, sell the same file forever. The trade-off is brutal competition and near-zero switching costs — differentiation and niche selection matter even more than for physical goods. Great as a portfolio expander or a low-risk first shop.

Does print-on-demand (POD) work on Etsy?

Yes — Etsy allows POD with disclosed production partners (Printify, Printful, Gelato). Margins are thinner (production cost + Etsy fees), so POD lives or dies on design differentiation and niche targeting. Generic quote t-shirts drown; specific designs for specific audiences ("gift for ICU nurses who crochet") still find room.

When should I list seasonal products?

Etsy buyers shop early and listings need time to rank: get Christmas items live by September–early October, Valentine's by late December, Mother's Day by March. A useful rule: list 6–8 weeks before you personally would start shopping for that occasion.

06 · First sales & staying sane

Expectation-setting, honestly.

How long does the first sale take?

Wildly variable, but a realistic picture: with 10–20 solid listings in a validated niche, most active shops see the first sale within 2–8 weeks. Days-one sales happen; so do three-month waits in saturated niches. The biggest accelerators are niche selection, first-photo quality, and listing count — the biggest killer is listing products nobody searched for.

Should I renew listings or keep adding new ones?

New listings beat renewals: each new listing is a fresh chance to match new queries, while renewing mostly re-buys a small recency bump for $0.20. Renew what's proven and selling; spend the rest of your energy on new listings and improving underperformers.

How do I get my first reviews?

Over-deliver on the basics: ship on time or early, package carefully, include a small thank-you note. A polite message after delivery ("hope it arrived safely — if anything's off, tell me first") lifts review rates without begging. Never buy or trade reviews — Etsy detects it and the penalty outweighs the benefit.
