Etsy shipping costs: how to set them, and what Etsy takes from them
Etsy does not set your shipping price: You determine your own shipping rates, but the Seller Handbook can help guide you.
You enter fixed prices per destination, or — from the US or Canada with USPS, Global Postal Shipping or Canada Post — let calculated shipping price each order. Whatever the buyer pays for shipping, Etsy’s transaction and payment processing fees are taken from it too: from the United States that is 9.5% of the shipping charge, $0.76 of every $8.00. Enter what you charge and what the label costs to see whether shipping pays for itself. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Etsy’s share here is the part of the fees the shipping charge adds: transaction fee, the percentage part of payment processing and any regulatory fee, plus tax on Etsy’s fees where it applies — the same dated table as the fee calculator. The fixed part of payment processing is charged once per order whatever the shipping is. No sales tax on the order; Offsite Ads, when an order comes from one, takes its own share of shipping too (Offsite Ads calculator).
Etsy charges its fees on shipping
When you make a sale through Etsy.com, you will be charged a transaction fee of 6.5% of the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping.
- Etsy Fee Basics, on the same fee:
This fee applies to the total cost of the item, along with shipping and gift wrap (if you charge your customers for those).
- Payment processing:
The fees are taken from the item’s total sale price, including its shipping fees, and any applicable sales tax.
- Labels bought on Etsy are charged to your Payment account:
Fees and purchases that aren't tied to a sale, like Etsy Ads, shipping labels, listing fees, and subscriptions, come out of your Current balance when they're charged.
So “shipping at cost” loses a little on every order: a US seller who charges exactly the $6.00 a label costs keeps $5.43 of it and pays the other $0.57 from the item price. Charging $6.63 covers that label after Etsy’s share.

Three ways to price shipping
Fixed prices you enter
Be sure to set a rate for each country you'd like to ship items.
Many buyers only see Etsy listings that ship to their country.
The additional item rate will be applied if a buyer purchases more than one of this item or another item within your shop, and this listing’s shipping is less or equal to the other item.
If you edit a shipping profile, it will update on every listing you’ve applied it to.
A listing can only be connected to one shipping profile.
Calculated shipping
If you’re located in the US or Canada and you ship your orders with the USPS, Global Postal Shipping, or Canada Post, you can use calculated shipping on Etsy.
Calculated shipping combines your location, the buyer’s location, and the item’s size and weight to generate shipping costs for orders.
We default to the least expensive shipping method that is eligible for the total weight and dimensions of the item.
On March 19, the option to charge handling and package fees was removed.
These changes only apply to sellers using calculated shipping.
To account for these costs consider moving them into your listing prices while keeping the total price the same.
Etsy’s article on the change is dated 19 March 2025. Packing materials and handling now belong in the item price for calculated-shipping profiles; the fee is the same either way, because Etsy charges it on price plus shipping.
Free shipping
Free shipping moves the label into the item price. The fees do not change when you do that — they follow what the buyer pays in total — and Etsy names a US free shipping guarantee for items and orders of $35 and up, and US shipping under $6, among the things that may help a listing’s rank: Etsy free shipping: the $35 guarantee and the $6 line.
Shipping labels on Etsy
This means less time at the post office, access to some postage discounts, and you can easily request refunds for unused labels.
We offer labels for the following carriers:
Canada Post, Chit Chats, FedEx, Global Postal Shipping, UPS®, USPS, Royal Mail, Evri. When available, using shipping labels purchased on Etsy positively impacts your Star Seller shipping score.
Before purchasing a shipping label, sellers in the US can preview the cost to ship both domestic and international packages using the shipping calculator.
The rates shown through the shipping calculator on Etsy are for reference purposes only and may change.
As of July 1, 2026, Canada Post and USPS shipping labels are temporarily unavailable for certain EU destinations due to a new EU handling fee affecting some carriers.
In response to recent changes to US trade policies, we’ve temporarily suspended the purchase and use of US-bound shipping labels on Etsy through Evri, and Canada Post.
Etsy does not publish label prices or how large its postage discounts are, so this page does not either: the shipping calculator in Shop Manager (Help → Estimate shipping costs) shows the rates for a package before you buy, and the label page shows the final price. Put that price into the calculator above.
Selling to the US from another country
If you’re a seller outside the US, you can set up a different listing price for orders shipping within your country, to the US, and all other countries.
Etsy recommends that global sellers who ship to the US set US-specific prices on their listings.
If you don’t set US-specific pricing, US buyers will see your global price.
Orders shipping into the US also need duties and import fees paid up front: Etsy DDP: shipping to US buyers from outside the US.

Common questions
Who sets shipping costs on Etsy?
The seller. Etsy: “You determine your own shipping rates, but the Seller Handbook can help guide you.” You enter fixed prices, or use calculated shipping: “If you’re located in the US or Canada and you ship your orders with the USPS, Global Postal Shipping, or Canada Post, you can use calculated shipping on Etsy.”
Does Etsy take a fee on shipping?
Yes. The transaction fee covers “the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for shipping and gift wrapping”, and payment processing is taken from “the item’s total sale price, including its shipping fees”. From the United States that is 9.5% of what you charge for shipping: $0.76 of $8.00.
How much should I charge for shipping on Etsy?
Enough to cover the label after Etsy’s share, or nothing, with the label moved into the item price. A US seller whose label costs $6.00 needs to charge $6.63 for shipping to cover it. Etsy’s shipping calculator in Shop Manager previews label rates, but “The rates shown through the shipping calculator on Etsy are for reference purposes only and may change.”
Can I add a handling fee on Etsy?
Not with calculated shipping. Etsy: “On March 19, the option to charge handling and package fees was removed.” “These changes only apply to sellers using calculated shipping.” Etsy suggests moving the cost into the item price.
Do Etsy shipping labels help my shop?
They count toward Star Seller. Etsy: “When available, using shipping labels purchased on Etsy positively impacts your Star Seller shipping score.”
Is free shipping better on Etsy?
It costs the same in fees when the label moves into the price, and Etsy says free shipping to US shoppers may improve a listing’s rank. The details, with the $35 US guarantee, are on the free shipping page.
Do you store what I type?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the numbers you type never leave it. We count anonymously that the page was used and which result it showed, so we can tell whether the page earns its place.
