Etsy variations: the limits, and when to use personalization instead
Etsy: You can add variations for up to 3 item attributes while creating or editing a listing.
Options multiply into combinations — For example, if your listing offers 10 sizes, 25 colors, and 10 materials, it has 2,500 option combinations (10 × 25 × 10).
The limits: a listing with 3 variation types can have up to 2,500 combinations, one or two types up to 4,900, and prices, SKUs and quantities can differ for up to 400 of them. Digital listings cannot have variations at all. Enter your options to see which limit your listing meets; nothing you type leaves your browser.
Tick “differs” on the variations whose options change the price, SKU or quantity (the “vary” toggles in Etsy’s variation editor). When two varying types are ticked, every pair carries its own price, so their option counts multiply.

To help keep Etsy’s website loading quickly for buyers, some limits apply to listings with many variation options:
An option combination is a unique version of your item created by your variation choices.
How variations work
If you offer different options for an item within the same listing, you can add those options as variations.
Separate choices like size, color, and style into distinct variations instead of combining them.
If you want to vary the price, quantity, processing profile, or SKU numbers for your variation, toggle those options on.
The price you set for each option is the total price for each version of the item, not an additional cost.
However, buyers won’t be able to filter their Etsy search results based on custom variations.
You must have at least one option visible.
If you set the quantity for one of your options to “0”, it will appear on the listing page as Sold out.
If you have variations on a listing, buyers must select the options they want before adding your item to their cart.
Variations or personalization?
Use variations when buyers are choosing from a set list of options that impact price, inventory, or SKU (like size, color, or material).
Stock is tracked for each variation.
Use personalization when buyers are adding custom details.
The input doesn’t impact your product inventory levels.
- Custom listings are for one buyer:
Buyers submit a request for a one-of-a-kind item based on their specific vision or preferences.
- Personalization lives in Custom options:
You can add up to 5 fields per listing.
A list field:You can include up to 30 options.
File upload:You can add one upload field per listing.
Buyers can upload up to 10 files, with a maximum size of 100 MB per file.
Add-on pricing is only supported for optional, text-based Custom options fields.
If you use variations to charge for text-based customizations, consider switching to an optional Custom options field with add-on pricing instead.
If you need a buyer’s phone number for shipping purposes, contact them via Messages.
