Why is my Etsy listing inactive? Etsy’s five reasons, and how to bring it back
Etsy: Here are some of the most common reasons you may not be able to locate a listing which was previously active in your shop:
Your listing expired; It’s possible you deactivated the listing; The item sold out; Etsy may have removed the listing for violating site policy; Your shop may be suspended. Where the listing now sits in Shop Manager tells you which one it is — and whether bringing it back is free or costs the $0.20 renewal fee. Pick it below, or paste the listing link and see the status Etsy reports for it.
Opens the free listing checker, which asks Etsy’s API for that listing and shows the status Etsy reports for it, its expiry date and whether it auto-renews. If Etsy’s API returns nothing for the link, the checker says so; Etsy does not say why.
The five reasons, and what each one costs to fix
Etsy: Listings may be inactive if they expire or sell out, or if you deactivate them.
Listings may also be inactive if your shop is suspended.
| Reason | Where Etsy says to look | Etsy fee to bring it back |
|---|---|---|
| Expired | Shop Manager → Listings → Expired | $0.20 |
| Deactivated | Shop Manager → Listings → Inactive | None; $0.20 if it expired while inactive |
| Sold out | Shop Manager → Orders → Sold orders | $0.20 |
| Removed by Etsy | Etsy’s email and the Policy violations page | Etsy states none; appeal where available |
| Shop suspended | Etsy’s email and your shop Dashboard | Not a listing fee |
It expired
A listing stays active for four months.
If your listing doesn't sell during that time, and you haven’t set it to automatically renew, it expires.
When you list a new item, it's set to automatically renew as the default.
Just like posting a new listing, there will be a $0.20 USD fee charged to your Payment account each time you renew a listing.
While this will give it a new listing date and a new expiration date (4 months from the renewal date), the renewed listing will still keep its original view count, number of favorites, and web address.
You can also sign up to receive reminder emails when you have items that will expire within seven days.
How the four months are counted: how long an Etsy listing lasts.
It was deactivated
Deactivating listings removes them from your shop page, and buyers can no longer buy them.
However, the listing still exists in your Shop Manager and you can reactivate it.
You can renew any inactive listings to make them active.
Deactivating a listing doesn't affect its four month listing period.
If your item expires while it’s inactive, you’ll be asked to renew the item for a $0.20 USD fee before you can reactivate it.
There’s no fee for reactivating a listing that hasn't expired.
It sold out
You can find sold out listings in your Sold orders.
If you have more of an item stocked, you can renew your sold out listing.
If you’re selling an item with variations like different sizes or colors, each option will automatically have their quantity set to “1” when listings are renewed.
If you don’t want your sold out listings to be visible to buyers anymore, you have the option to hide it instead of renewing it.
Etsy removed it
If a listing violates Etsy’s policies, we may remove it.
If a listing is removed, your shop may remain open and able to accept orders (as long as your account has not been suspended for other reasons).
Etsy may remove listings that violate the following policies:
Etsy’s Creativity Standards; Prohibited Items Policy; Sanctions Policy; Intellectual Property Policy. In addition to our policies, items listed on Etsy are required to comply with all applicable laws.
Check your email for a message from Etsy.
Be sure to look in your spam or junk mail.
The Policy violations page can help you keep track of removed listings, understand why a listing was removed, and get quick access to policy resources right when you need it.
If your listing was removed and you believe this is a mistake, you may be able to appeal to restore it from the Policy violations page.
In some cases, you may be able to submit an appeal to get your removed listing reinstated.
- Mature content:
The quickest way to resolve a listing that was removed by Etsy for violating our Mature Content Policy is to create a new listing for this item that meets the guidelines below.
Your first listing image should be family-friendly.
When we deactivate listings for violating this policy, the listing fee(s) are refunded to your Payment account.
Etsy’s AI and originality rules are among the Creativity Standards: Etsy AI policy.
The shop is suspended
The problem may not be with your listings, but with your shop.
If your shop is suspended, depending on the reason, you may have received an email from Etsy or there may be a message about the suspension on your shop Dashboard.
Many causes of a suspension can be quickly resolved on your own or by working with Etsy to resolve the issue.
A live listing that gets no views is a different problem: why an Etsy listing is not showing in search.
