What is the Etsy title character limit?

140 characters, counting spaces and punctuation. Etsy states it in one sentence. The harder question — and the one most pages skip — is what belongs at the front, because Etsy does not publish where a title gets cut off on screen.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you paste is stored.

The short answer

140 charactersEtsy’s wording: “A listing’s title can be up to 140 characters long.” Spaces, commas and pipes all count.
It is a ceiling, not a targetNothing rewards you for reaching 140. A 26-character title is a valid listing; it just describes less.
Etsy does not publish a truncation pointWhere a title visually cuts off depends on the device, the surface and the buyer’s screen. Any page that gives you one exact number for this is estimating, not quoting.

What 140 characters actually buys you

Long enough for a product name and a few qualifying phrases — and Etsy also suggests keeping a title under 15 words. Not long enough for everything you want to say — which is the point.

Etsy sets the 140-character ceiling and, on the same help page, suggests: “Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special.” Inside both, the title stops being a character-count problem and becomes an ordering problem: which phrase deserves to go first.

How long titles run in practice: across 5,600 live listings in 56 products, the median title per product ran from 64 to 133 characters, and 28.2% of titles were within 10 characters of the 140 limit. Counted from Etsy’s API on 21 October 2026 to 22 October 2026: Etsy listing data.

The number you should be careful with

You will see confident claims that buyers only see the first 40 characters, or the first 60, or the first 24 words. Etsy’s published help pages do not state any of these. They are observations from looking at search results on one device at one moment, and they change whenever Etsy adjusts its layout.

What is safe to say: the front of the title is read more often than the back, on every surface, so the strongest phrase belongs first. That guidance does not need a fake number attached to it.

Growtsy’s free title checker enforces the published 140-character limit. For the opening it uses roughly the first 40 characters as a rough guide, and labels that as an observation, not an Etsy rule.

How to check your own title in one minute

  1. Copy the title from your Etsy shop manager.
  2. Count it. Over 140 and Etsy will not save it as written.
  3. Read only the first line as a buyer would. If the product is not identifiable yet, the order is wrong — not the length.
  4. Or paste it into the free Etsy title checker, which flags the limit, filler openers and repeated keywords at once.
  5. Not sure which words to lead with? The Etsy title generator counts the phrases real titles in your search share, and how many put each one in the first 40 characters.

Does Growtsy’s own output respect the limit?

Worth asking of any tool that writes titles for you. Checked against the database on 22 October 2026: every title Growtsy has generated since 21 April 2026 (530 titles) is inside Etsy’s 140-character limit; the longest is 127 characters. Before that date the clamp was missing and 61 generated titles ran long, the longest at 163 characters. The clamp was added; there has been no violation since.

Tags are held to 13 per listing and 20 characters each; the database showed zero violations when we checked it on 23 October 2026. Much of that sample is the founder’s own testing — Growtsy is a new product and does not pretend otherwise.

Common questions

What is the Etsy title character limit?

140 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Etsy’s help page states: “A listing’s title can be up to 140 characters long.”

How long should an Etsy title be?

There is no required length — 140 is a maximum, not a target. Etsy’s listing guidance adds: “Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special.”

How many words should an Etsy title be?

Fewer than 15, Etsy suggests: “Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special.” It is guidance, not a hard limit like the 140 characters; the free title checker warns at 15 words or more.

How many characters of an Etsy title do buyers see before it is cut off?

Etsy does not publish this figure. Where a title is visually truncated depends on the device and the surface it appears on, so any single exact number is an estimate rather than a quote from Etsy.

Do spaces and punctuation count toward the 140 characters?

Yes. The limit applies to the title exactly as written, so spaces, commas and pipes all consume characters.

Do you store the titles I paste into the checker?

No. The Etsy title checker runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing to a server.

A title that fits is not the same as a title worth publishing

140 valid characters can still describe a product nobody is searching for. Growtsy reads the listing against live Etsy market data and returns a decision — publish, improve, fix the visuals, reprice, or wrong niche — instead of another keyword list.
