Your Etsy listing isn’t showing up in search

There are only two possibilities, and they need opposite fixes. Either the listing has left search entirely — six specific states Etsy names — or it is in search and ranking below where you are looking. Check the first in two minutes; only then work on the second.

Nothing on this page is our opinion about how Etsy ranks. Every rule below is quoted from Etsy’s own help centre or its published ranking disclosure, with the date we read it.

Step 0 — did you publish it in the last 48 hours?

Then it may simply not be indexed yetEtsy, on its Create a Listing page: “Once published, it may take up to 48 hours for your listing to appear in Etsy search results and categories.” Inside that window nothing is wrong. Editing the listing now only resets what you are waiting on — leave it alone until the two days are up, then start at step 1.

Step 1 — is the listing even active?

If a listing is not active it is not in search at all, and no amount of keyword work will help. Etsy names six states. Open Shop Manager → Listings and check them in this order.

It expired“A listing stays active for four months. If your listing doesn’t sell during that time, and you haven’t set it to automatically renew, it expires.” Filter your listings by Expired. This is the most common cause by a distance, and it is silent — nothing warns you. How the four-month term works.
You deactivated itFilter by Inactive. Etsy’s instruction is to renew an inactive listing to bring it back.
It sold outA listing with zero quantity left leaves search. Check Orders → Sold, and relist if you still have stock.
Etsy removed it for a policy violation“If a listing violates Etsy’s policies, we may remove it.” Etsy emails you — check spam — and the Policy violations page in Shop Manager lists it. You can appeal if you think it is wrong.
It broke the mature content ruleHandled separately from other removals. Etsy’s fix is to create a new listing whose first image is family-friendly, with anything mature cropped or censored in the thumbnail.
Your whole account is suspendedNot the listing — the shop. A banner appears on the Shop Manager dashboard. Nothing you do to the listing matters until that is resolved.

If none of these apply, the listing is in search. Go to step 2 — and stop editing tags for a moment, because the most likely explanation is not about your keywords at all.

Step 2 — the reason most sellers never hear: frequency capping

Etsy’s published ranking disclosure lists a parameter called frequency capping, which limits “the number of times the same listing or shop appears at the top of results”.

What that means for youSearching your own keyword, from your own account, and not seeing your item is expected behaviour, not evidence that you have been removed. Etsy is deliberately spreading shops across the results page. Results are also personalised, and Etsy prioritises local shops in some markets — so what you see is not what a buyer in another country sees.
How to check properlySearch the full exact title of the listing. If it comes back, the listing is indexed and the problem is rank, not visibility. If the exact title returns nothing, go back to step 1 — something in that list applies.

Step 3 — what Etsy says actually decides rank

These are Etsy’s own named parameters, from its Search, Advertisement & Recommendation Ranking Disclosures. Not a blog’s theory — the list Etsy publishes.

Etsy’s parameterWhat Etsy says it meansCan you change it today?
Relevancy“how proximate keywords in a listings’ tags, titles, descriptions, or attributes are relative to the search query”Yes — this is the one you control outright
Listing engagement rateclicks, views, favourites and purchases, “to determine how well the listing will convert”Indirectly — better photo and price, not more keywords
Recency“how recently an item was listed or re-listed”; new listings get a temporary boostOnly by listing or renewing
Listing and shop quality“completeness of the shop”, “sufficient high quality images or return policies”Yes — and it is usually unfinished
Customer service qualityreviews, message responsiveness, “shop review ratings, case rates”, policy violationsSlowly
Shipping“shipping price and method”, free-shipping guarantee, competitive ratesYes — today
Translations, location, languageEtsy “translates seller keywords” and prioritises local shops in certain marketsPartly
Frequency cappinglimits “the number of times the same listing or shop appears at the top of results”No — and it explains step 2
Context specific rankingresults shaped by “related keywords and what buyers are interested in”No

Step 4 — the checklist Etsy runs on your listing

Etsy’s own Search Visibility page names the conditions a listing should meet for priority placement. These are quoted, not inferred — and most of them are about the photo, not the keywords.

Etsy also states that once you fix something, “the insights will typically disappear within 24 hours”. That is the only timing figure Etsy publishes anywhere in this area — see the next section.

Common questions

Why is my Etsy listing not showing up in search?

First check the clock: Etsy says it “may take up to 48 hours for your listing to appear in Etsy search results and categories” after publishing. After that, either it is not active, or it is active and ranked below where you looked. Etsy names six states that take a listing out of search entirely: it expired after four months, you deactivated it, it sold out, Etsy removed it for a policy violation, it broke the mature content rule, or your account is suspended. Check those first in Shop Manager → Listings. If none apply, the listing is in search and the question is rank, not visibility.

Why can’t I find my own listing when I search for it?

Because Etsy deliberately limits it. Etsy’s published ranking disclosure names frequency capping, which limits “the number of times the same listing or shop appears at the top of results”, and results are also personalised and location-weighted. Search the full exact title instead: if it appears, the listing is indexed.

How long does Etsy take to index a new listing?

Up to 48 hours. Etsy’s wording on the Create a Listing page: “Once published, it may take up to 48 hours for your listing to appear in Etsy search results and categories.” So if you published within the last two days, nothing is wrong — wait before changing anything. Etsy does not publish an equivalent figure for how long an edit to an existing listing takes to be reflected.

What does Etsy actually use to rank listings?

Etsy publishes the list: relevancy, listing engagement rate, recency, listing and shop quality, customer service quality, shipping, translations and location and language, frequency capping, and context specific ranking. Relevancy is defined as “how proximate keywords in a listings’ tags, titles, descriptions, or attributes are relative to the search query”.

Does editing a listing hurt its ranking?

Etsy names recency as a parameter — “how recently an item was listed or re-listed” — and says new listings get a temporary boost. It does not say that editing removes ranking. What editing does not do is restart the four-month term.

My listing gets views but no sales. Is that a search problem?

No. Views mean Etsy is already showing the listing. That is a photo, price or description problem. Etsy’s own engagement parameter combines “clicks, views, favorites, and purchases to determine how well the listing will convert” — so a listing that is seen and not chosen will drift down over time if nothing changes.
