Etsy fees in Turkey

Of the 32 seller countries in Etsy’s fee table, Turkey carries the heaviest load: 19.2% of a $36 order, against 10.8% for a seller in the United States. One of those lines — the 20% KDV Etsy charges on its own fees — can be removed entirely, and almost no English-language page says so. Removing it is worth about $766 a year on a $2,000-a-month shop. It also does not fix the problem, and the second half of this page explains why.

The whole gap fits on one line

Etsy’s percentage fees are not added together and left alone. In Turkey they are added together and then multiplied.

On top of the percentage, both countries pay the $0.20 listing fee and a fixed amount per order — 14.00 TRY in Turkey, $0.25 in the US. In Turkey the 20% KDV applies to those flat fees too, so the $0.20 listing fee is really $0.24. The United States is the only one of the 32 countries where Etsy charges no VAT on its own fees at all — 30 of the other 31 are taxed, and Brazil is the one Etsy’s article never names.

The line you can remove — and why it does not fix the problem

This is the most valuable thing on the page, and it is missing from almost every English-language guide to Turkish Etsy fees.

Turkey is in Etsy’s “VAT ID means we do not charge you” groupEtsy’s own help page puts it plainly: “If you added your VAT ID to your Etsy account, you won’t be charged. Instead, you will receive an invoice from Etsy on the first of each month stating that you were not charged VAT on your seller fees.” Türkiye is named in that group, alongside the EU (except Ireland), the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore and India. Ireland, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Switzerland are in the other group — charged regardless.

What it is worthOn the $36 order above, the KDV line is $1.15. Remove it and Etsy’s take falls from $6.92 to $5.77, or from 19.2% to 16.0% of the gross. That is 3.2% of everything you sell: about $766 a year on a shop turning over $2,000 a month. Same product, same price, same work.

But it is still the worst rate of the countries that can do itTwenty-four of the 32 seller countries can remove the charge the same way. With every one of them doing so, Turkey is still last: $5.77 on the $36 order, against $4.33 across most of the EU and $3.80 in Australia and New Zealand. Turkey with its VAT removed is still more expensive than the United States with nothing removed ($3.87).

Because the removable part was never the problemStrip the VAT out of every country and rank what is left: Turkey’s pre-tax percentage load is 14.67% — the highest of all 32, ahead of Brazil at 13.00% and Japan at 12.50%, against 9.50% in the US. The 6.5% payment rate and the 1.67% regulatory fee are untouched by any tax registration. The KDV is the part you can argue with; the rest you have to price around.

And it is a decision, not a settingAdding a VAT ID is one field on Etsy’s side and an obligation on Turkey’s side — registration, filing, accounting. Whether the $766 is worth what it costs to be registered depends on your turnover and is a question for a mali müšavir, not for a calculator, including ours. What this page is claiming is narrower and worth knowing: the line exists, and it is removable.

What is specific to Turkey

The headline 6.5% transaction fee is the same in all 32 countries. These are the lines that actually differ.

Payment processing is 6.5% — the joint-highest rate Etsy charges anywhereTwenty-eight of the 32 seller countries sit between 3% and 4.5%; the United States is 3%. Turkey and Brazil are the only two markets at 6.5%. On a $36 order that single line costs $2.63 in Turkey against $1.33 in the US, and no tax registration touches it. It is the biggest single component of the gap.

The regulatory operating fee is 1.67% — but it went down in JuneOnly 8 of the 32 seller countries carry a Regulatory Operating Fee at all; Germany and Australia have none. Turkey’s was cut from 2.27% to 1.67% on 22 June 2026, which is good news that barely got written about — calculators still showing 2.27% are understating your margin. Only one other country stacks all three, and every one of its rates is lowerIndia is the only other market with a payment rate above 5%, a regulatory operating fee, and VAT on fees at the same time — and India’s three are 5%, 0.05% and 18%, against Turkey’s 6.5%, 1.67% and 20%. No country in Etsy’s table is worse than Turkey on the combination. That is what puts Turkey 32nd of 32.

The 14 TRY fixed fee is the one line denominated in liraAlongside the 6.5%, Etsy charges a fixed 14.00 TRY per order. Japan and Brazil have their fixed fee set in US dollars; Turkey’s is set in lira, so it is the one fee on this page that does not get more expensive in dollar terms when the lira weakens. At the reference rate this page uses it converts to about $0.29.

Payoneer is not a way outThe rates above assume Etsy Payments, which is available in Turkey. Sellers routed through Payoneer instead can end up with a higher effective rate once withdrawal and currency conversion are counted, not a lower one. Treat this page’s figures as the best case for a Turkish shop rather than the worst.

A dash in the fourth column means the charge cannot be removed by adding a VAT ID: Etsy charges it regardless in Ireland, Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Switzerland; there is no VAT on fees to remove in the United States; Etsy names Canada in a section of its own but publishes no rate there, and never names Brazil at all. “You keep” is the default case, before any VAT ID. Local-currency fixed fees are converted to USD at a stored reference rate, so treat the last decimal as indicative. Excludes Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads — those are a chosen budget and an order-specific fee, not a cost on every sale.

What the gap actually costs a Turkish shop

The percentages are abstract. These are not.

$3.05 per order, or $1.90 with a VAT ID on file. On the $36 order above, Etsy takes $6.92 from a Turkish seller and $3.87 from a US seller. Same listing, same buyer, same product.
$305 per hundred sales. A hundred orders at $36 costs $692 in fees from Turkey and $387 from the US. A shop doing 500 orders a year at that price gives up $1,525 to geography alone — $950 of it unavoidable.
You have to price about 10% higher to take home the same money. To net what a US seller nets on a $36 order, a Turkish seller has to list at $39.70. The buyer never sees the fee table — only the price — so the gap comes out of either your margin or your competitiveness. Choosing which is the actual decision.

This is why product choice matters more for a Turkish shop than for a US one. An 8-point fee gap is survivable on a differentiated $60 product and fatal on a commodity $12 one.

Three things that surprise almost everyone

Etsy charges its transaction fee on shipping. The 6.5% applies to the postage you charge the buyer, not just the item. Pricing shipping at cost still costs you 6.5% of it — and in Turkey the regulatory fee and the KDV ride on the same base.
The listing fee is charged again on renewal, and it carries KDV. $0.20 is per listing per four months, and again every time an item sells if auto-renew is on. With 20% KDV that is $0.24 a listing in Turkey, so a 100-listing shop pays about $24 every cycle before a single sale.
Offsite Ads can take 12–15% of an order on top of everything above, and once your shop passes the revenue threshold it is mandatory. It is order-specific, so it is deliberately excluded from the table above — but it is real, and it lands on your biggest orders.

Can Turkish sellers avoid the 20% KDV on Etsy fees?

Yes, at Etsy's end. Etsy's help page on VAT collection lists Türkiye among the countries where adding a VAT ID to your account means the charge is not applied — you receive a monthly invoice confirming you were not charged. On a $36 order that removes $1.15 and takes the total from 19.2% to 16.0% of the gross, worth roughly $766 a year on a $2,000-a-month shop. Registering for VAT in Turkey carries its own obligations and costs, so whether it is worth it is a question for an accountant.

Why do Turkish sellers pay more than sellers in any other country?

Because three things stack. Payment processing is 6.5%, the joint-highest rate Etsy charges in any market. The Regulatory Operating Fee is 1.67%, second only to Hungary among the eight countries that have one. And 20% KDV is applied on top of both. Added together the percentage fees come to 14.67%, and the KDV multiplies that to 17.60% — against 9.50% for a US seller. Even with the KDV removed, 14.67% is still the highest pre-tax load of the 32 countries.
