Etsy photo checker

Drop a listing photo in. You get the size and upload checks, and — the part most sellers never see — exactly what Etsy's square, portrait and landscape thumbnail crops cut off. The photo never leaves your browser; there is no upload.

What Etsy actually asks for

These are Etsy's own stated requirements, not folklore:

RuleEtsy's wording
Hard minimumAt least 635 px wide and tall for the first photo — below that the listing can rank lower in search
Recommended2000 px or more on width and height
File sizeFiles over 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection
Formats.jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, .heic — animated .gif and transparent .png are not supported
ColourConvert to sRGB before uploading
First photo shapeShould be horizontal (landscape) or square

The crop is the part that costs sales

Etsy does not show your first photo whole. It crops it to a square, a portrait and a landscape thumbnail depending on where it appears — search results, the app, recommendations. Etsy's own guidance is to leave enough border that the product survives all three crops.

In practice this means a product that fills the frame edge to edge looks great in your photo editor and gets its edges sliced off in search. The three previews above show you each crop against your actual photo, so you can see it rather than guess.

What this tool does not do

It checks the technical file, not the picture. It cannot tell you whether the lighting is flat, whether the background is doing the product any favours, or whether the first frame makes someone stop scrolling. Those are judgement calls about the image itself, and this page has no opinion on them.

Common questions

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy asks for at least 635 px on width and height, and recommends 2000 px or more. The practical answer for most sellers is 2000 × 2000 or 2000 × 1500 — big enough for zoom, small enough to upload.

Why does my Etsy photo look cropped in search?

Because it is. Etsy crops the first photo to square, portrait and landscape thumbnails for different surfaces. If the product touches the edges of your photo, part of it is cut off in at least one of those crops.

Why won't my photo upload to Etsy?

The most common cause is file size. Etsy says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading, particularly on a slow connection. Exporting as JPEG at 80–90% quality usually fixes it without a visible drop.

Can I use a transparent PNG on Etsy?

No. Etsy states that transparent .png files and animated .gif files are not supported. Flatten the transparency onto a solid background before uploading.

Does this upload my photo anywhere?

No. The file is read by your own browser and never sent. There is no request, no account and no storage.

Passing the file check is not the same as a photo that sells

This page can tell you the file is the right size and survives the crop. It cannot make a flat product shot look like something someone wants. Growtsy turns a single product photo into listing-ready scene and lifestyle images, and flags the ones where the product drifted so they never reach your gallery.
