How it works
- One request to Etsy. Your words go to Etsy’s API as an active-listing search, sorted by relevance; the first 100 results are read. Nothing is estimated and nothing comes from an AI model.
- Each listing counts once per tag. Tags are compared as written, ignoring capitals, so “gold necklace” and “gold necklaces” are counted separately. “Used by N of 100” means N of the listings Etsy returned carry exactly that tag.
- Brand and character names (Disney, Marvel, Stanley and similar) are counted and marked “brand name”, but never put in the 13-tag set. Using a trademark you don’t own in a tag can get a listing removed under Etsy’s intellectual property policy.
- Only shared tags are shown. A tag that only one listing uses is not a pattern, so the list starts at two.
- The 13-tag set takes the most-used phrases of two or more words first, skips word-order and plural twins (“necklace gold” after “gold necklace”), and fills any slots left with single words. Etsy’s limits:

What it cannot tell you
How many people search each tag, how many sales a tag brings, or whether these listings sell at all. Etsy’s API publishes neither search volume nor sales per listing, so any tool that shows them is estimating. A tag that many listings share is common wording for this search — that is all the count proves. Keep the tags that describe your item and replace the ones that don’t: material, colour, style and who it is for are yours to add. To know whether the product itself is worth making, and at what price, you need live market data on the product — that is what Growtsy’s Scout is for.
Common questions
Is the Etsy tag generator free?
Yes, with no account. It reads public listing data through Etsy’s API, which costs nothing per search, so there is nothing to unlock. There is a daily limit per visitor to keep the API key healthy for everyone.
Where do the tags come from?
From the active Etsy listings that Etsy’s API returns for your words at the moment you search. They are tags real sellers chose, not suggestions written by a model.
Why is a tag I expected missing?
Only the first 100 listings are read, and a tag has to be used by at least two of them to appear. If your phrase is very broad or very specific, try the two to four words a shopper would actually type.
Do you store my search?
No. The search is sent to Etsy when you press the button and the result is shown to you; nothing about it is saved. We count anonymously that the page was used and which kind of result it gave, with no search words and no cookies.
Why no search volume or competition score?
Because Etsy’s API does not provide search volume, and a score would be a number we made up. The page shows what can be checked: which tags real listings use and how many of them use each one.
Tags are the last step
