Why is my Etsy shop not getting sales?

Etsy doesn’t tell a seller why their shop isn’t selling, and no outside tool can see your sales listing by listing. What you can check is what Etsy itself says it looks at — whether your listings are live, their titles, tags and first photo, your shipping price and your customer service standards — starting with your own shop.

Reads up to 100 of your active listings from Etsy’s own API, checks each against the limits Etsy publishes and says what to fix first. No score, no sales estimate. Free, no signup.

The checklist, in the order to work through it

Each step is something Etsy has written down. Next to it: Etsy’s own words, and the free tool that checks it on your shop or listing. None of these steps comes with a promise of sales — Etsy makes none, and neither do we.

Step 1 — Are your listings live and buyable?

Vacation ModeEtsy: “When Vacation Mode is on, buyers can visit your shop and message you, but your listings are hidden from search and can’t be purchased.” Etsy can also switch it on for you: “If Etsy puts your shop in Vacation Mode, it usually means there's an issue with your account that needs to be resolved before you can continue selling.” How Vacation Mode works.
Expired, deactivated, sold-out or removed listingsEtsy: “A listing stays active for four months.” “If your listing doesn't sell during that time, and you haven’t set it to automatically renew, it expires.” The listing checker reads a listing’s state from Etsy’s API, and the shop audit flags every active listing with auto-renew off that ends within 30 days. Why Etsy listings go inactive.
Live, but you can’t find it in searchThat is a separate question with its own causes, including Etsy limiting how often the same shop appears at the top of results. Why a listing isn’t showing in search.

Step 2 — Do your titles fit Etsy’s rules?

What Etsy says“A listing's title can be up to 140 characters long.” And: “Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special.”
Check itThe title checker runs Etsy’s title rules on one title; the shop audit runs them on every active listing and lists the ones that break a rule first.

Step 3 — Are all your tag slots used?

What Etsy says“You can use up to 13 tags per listing”, “Each tag can contain up to 20 characters.” and “Each tag is an opportunity to be matched with a shopper’s search.”
Check itThe tag checker flags duplicate, single-word and over-long tags; the tag generator shows which tags listings already in that search use. The shop audit counts the listings with empty tag slots. The rank checker shows whether a listing is in the first 100 Etsy’s API returns for a phrase a shopper would type, and which of its words the title and tags are missing.

Step 4 — Does the first photo meet Etsy’s size?

What Etsy says“We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more. Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches.”
Check itThe shop audit flags every first photo under 635 pixels and every listing with a single photo; the photo checker measures a photo in your browser and shows what Etsy’s thumbnail crops cut off.

Step 5 — What does shipping cost a US buyer?

What Etsy saysFrom its ranking policy: “Shipping: shipping price and method are factors in search ranking.” And: “If sellers offer a US free shipping guarantee, free shipping or shipping prices under $6 to US shoppers, a Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) shipping method to US shoppers, or if they offer lower shipping prices to buyers in their own country, it may improve their listings rank in search results.” May is Etsy’s word, not a promise.
Check itEtsy free shipping shows how the $35 guarantee works and what moving shipping into the item price does to Etsy’s fees for your country.

Step 6 — Is your price in the range of live listings?

What you can compareEtsy’s public API doesn’t report what a listing sold for, so the only price comparison anyone can make is against asking prices. The niche checker reads Etsy’s first 100 search results for a product and shows the middle half and the median of the USD-priced listings — listing prices, not sale prices — plus the tags and title phrases they share.
Check your marginThe pricing calculator works backwards from your cost and the profit you want to the price to list at, with Etsy’s fees for your country.

Step 7 — Are you inside Etsy’s customer service standards?

What Etsy says“If you fall short of one or more of these standards, you risk lowering your search visibility.” Two of them: “You need to respond to 80% of first messages in a thread within the first 48 hours to meet the message response rate standard.” and “At least 80% of your orders need to ship on time to meet the on-time shipping standard.”
Check itType the numbers from Shop Manager’s Customer service stats into the Star Seller checker; it shows which minimum, if any, you are under. The badge itself is a different matter: “Star Seller badges do not directly impact your search ranking.”

Common questions

Why is my Etsy shop not getting sales?

Etsy doesn’t give a reason for any one shop, so the honest answer is a checklist of what Etsy says it looks at. In order: are your listings live (Vacation Mode hides them from search); do titles and tags fit Etsy’s limits (140 characters for a title, 13 tags of up to 20 characters); is each first photo at least 635 pixels; what does shipping cost a US buyer; and are you inside Etsy’s customer service standards. The free shop audit runs the listing checks across up to 100 of your active listings.

Why am I getting views but no sales on Etsy?

Views mean Etsy is already showing the listing; buyers are choosing something else. Compare your first photo and your price with the listings around yours. The niche checker shows the middle half of the USD asking prices among Etsy’s first 100 search results for a product — listing prices, not sale prices — and the photo checker shows what Etsy’s thumbnail crops cut off your first photo.

How long does it take to get your first sale on Etsy?

Etsy doesn’t give a figure, and we don’t estimate one. What its ranking policy does say about new listings: “When a new listing is created, it gets a small, temporary boost in search results so that Etsy search can learn more about how buyers interact with it to determine the listing's quality score.”

Does a Star Seller badge help my shop get found?

Not directly, in Etsy’s own words: “Star Seller badges do not directly impact your search ranking.” The minimum standards underneath the badge are different: “If you fall short of one or more of these standards, you risk lowering your search visibility.” Those minimums are replying to 80% of first messages within 48 hours and shipping 80% of orders on time; the Star Seller checker shows which one, if any, you are under.

Can a tool tell me how many sales a listing makes, or will make?

No. Etsy’s API reports sales as one total per shop — “The total number of sales (transactions) for this shop.” — and nothing per listing, so any per-listing sales or revenue number is an estimate. Growtsy and its free tools don’t show one.
